Cathay Pacific's 2027 membership overhaul: what changes for Asia Miles members

By timeline.hk

The short version

From 1 January 2027, Cathay moves to a calendar-year membership with a new Diamond Exec tier at 2,400 Status Points, no point reset when you reach a tier, and up to 50% Status Point rollover for Gold and above.

Cathay Pacific is rebuilding its loyalty programme. Announced on 15 October 2025, the enhanced "Cathay" membership takes effect on 1 January 2027, with the whole of 2026 acting as a transition year. If you hold Asia Miles or Cathay status, the rules that decide your tier, your upgrades, and how many points you keep are about to change.

Here is the change in plain terms.

The five changes that matter

1. Status Points no longer reset when you reach a tier

Under the new system, your Status Points accumulate through the membership year without being consumed by an upgrade. In practice this means 600 Status Points take you from Green to Gold directly, rather than spending 300 points to reach Silver and then needing another 600 for Gold. Multiple tier upgrades within a single year become possible.

2. Membership moves to a calendar year

Membership periods now run from 1 January to 31 December for everyone, instead of starting on your account-anniversary date. Your 2027 status will be based on the Status Points you earn between 1 January and 31 December 2026.

3. Status Point rollover for Gold and above

At the end of a membership year, Gold, Diamond, and Diamond Exec members can carry forward excess Status Points — up to 50% of their tier's requirement:

  • Gold: up to 300 Status Points
  • Diamond: up to 600 Status Points
  • Diamond Exec: up to 1,200 Status Points

4. A new top tier: Diamond Exec

Diamond Exec sits above Diamond at 2,400 Status Points per year. Benefits include four sector upgrades (including to First Class), buggy service, the ability to gift Gold status to a companion, and a dedicated Relationship Manager.

5. Complimentary Diamond years for long-tenure members

Members who have held Diamond (or higher) cumulatively for 5 years can earn a free Diamond membership year for every 6,000 Status Points earned.

The catch

From 1 January 2027, Gold and Diamond members lose their mid-status benefits — the lounge passes, bookable upgrades, and buggy rides earned between tiers. If you hold these today, expect them to disappear when the new programme starts.

Status tiers at a glance

Tier Status Points / year Rollover (up to)
Green 0 —
Silver 300 —
Gold 600 300
Diamond 1,200 600
Diamond Exec 2,400 1,200

What stays the same

Asia Miles remain the spendable currency, and your miles stay active as long as you have one eligible transaction every 18 months. The 2022 merger of Asia Miles and the Marco Polo Club into a single "Cathay" membership is unchanged.

This post covers status and structure. A separate adjustment on 20 August 2025 reweighted how Asia Miles and Status Points are earned on Cathay flights: premium cabins earn more, the cheapest Economy Light fares earn less, and distance zones were refined on routes including Japan, Indonesia, and India. What this means for your strategy

  • Plan your 2026 flying to shape your 2027 tier, since 2026 earnings decide next year's status.
  • Reach for the next tier this year — points are no longer wasted when you cross a threshold.
  • Gold and Diamond members should use lounge passes and upgrade vouchers before 31 December 2026.
  • Award seats and monitoring still work the same way. This overhaul changes status and points, not how redemption availability is released — so set your watches on the routes you actually want.

Frequently asked questions

When do the changes take effect? The enhanced programme starts 1 January 2027. 2026 is a transition year with unchanged qualification rules.

How is my 2027 status determined? By the Status Points you earn between 1 January and 31 December 2026.

Do Status Points still reset annually? Yes, at the calendar-year boundary — but points are no longer consumed when you reach a tier mid-year, and Gold+ members can roll over up to 50% of their tier's requirement.

What happens to my lounge passes and upgrade vouchers? Mid-status benefits end on 1 January 2027. Use them before then.
